Not a good weekend for Hawaii sports

It was looking like a good sports weekend with Wie leading by three strokes after 10 holes. Then came the double bogey at 11th followed by three straight birdies by Stanford. I thought there could be a comeback with the short birdie putt at the 16th but it was not to be. I hope Wie continues to play well this season. Wie will definitely boost the LPGA attendance this year.

Then came the nightcap with UH vs Nevada. UH, up 46-40 with a couple of minutes to play, managed to hand the game to Nevada 47-46. Turnovers and horrible free throw shooting killed them in the end. I'm glad I wasn't at the arena even if it was buy one, get one free date night special.

Achilles Updates - 2/15/09

Healing is going good. I've been in the walking boot for about three weeks now. At first it was hard to walk in the boot because I couldn't flex my ankle. It has gotten alot easier since then. Last week, I even started driving my car which is stick shift! Pushing the clutch in was harder than I thought but my foot got stronger after a couple of days of driving. I heard that if I got into an accident,even if it's not my fault, I would be liable because of my walking boot so I throw it in the back seat. Dunno if that'll make a diff. I just have one more week to go now before I can take my boot off officially. I just want to get the rehab started.

Here's a pic from today. The cut is healing good. It was smelling a little funky with all the dead skin but I cleaned it real good today. I won't be walking in the boot till Jan 26th. Right now I have to use the boot but can't walk in it. At least I don't have to wear it when I go to sleep.

Achilles Update - 1/6/09

I removed my stitches yesterday and I'm now outfitted with a removable boot. It was good to wash the foot finally! I still can't put any weight on it but I should be able to do that in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to get off the dang crutches!!!

I needed some packing material so I was gonna go down to Fisher Hawaii to get some bubble wrap. On a whim I decided to check Craigslist to see if anyone was listing it and voila! Picked it up from Manoa for free! I love Craigslist!

What a turnaround for the Miami Dolphins! From 1-15 last season to 11-5 this season and AFC East champs! Davone Bess was a big part of the turnaround contributing 54 receptions with 554 yards and a TD. Good to see UH players doing good!

Achilles injury update - 12/29/08

Went in to check on the suture and all is looking good. Here's a picture. The swelling isn't too bad and the pain is getting less and less each day. I'll be removing the stitches next Monday.

There are two types of achilles surgery:

In open surgery, the surgeon makes a single large incision in the back of the leg.
In percutaneous surgery, the surgeon makes several small incisions rather than one large incision.

My doc said that percutaneous are more susceptible to rerupture so most of the time they do open surgery.

I should be in a walking boot on January 23rd. One month from the surgery.

I set up my Flexible Savings Account(FSA) which is a way to use pre-tax dollars to pay for approved medical expenses. This the first time I'm using FSA so I allocated $700 for the upcoming year. I'll have till April 2010 to use the $700 up or use it. Shouldn't be a problem with the PT and other charges.

I stopped taking the pain killers yesterday. Looks like the healing is progressing good. It's starting to get itchy sometimes in the cast which gets irritating. I'm sure it'll get worse. My goal is to get off of the crutches as soon as possible. Thankfully, I injured my left achilles so I can drive an automatic car. I'll be switching cars with my dad so I'll have something to drive.

Blackout!

Being in a blackout in crutches isn't fun. Extremely thankful to have my girlfriend's help. We had MREs and played Scrabble under a gas lamp to pass the time. Power came back sometime in the morning. Listening to the radio was pretty entertaining. Amazing how people freak out without electricity. Glad I wasn't in an elevator though!

Achilles injury update

Got my surgery done by Dr. Sydney Smith at Queen's hospital on Tuesday Dec 23rd at 3pm.
Went in, got knocked out and was waking up at 430pm. They gave me medication for nausea and pain. I didn't have to take any of the nausea medicine but I needed the oxycodeine(tylox). It takes awhile for it to kick in though. Probably around 40 minutes before it works. Right now I just have to stay off of it and elevate it. I go back for a followup on Dec 29th. I can't wait to start rehabbing. Prognosis is one month before I can go to a walking boot and four-five months before I'm completely back.

Been playing Resident Evil 4 to pass the time and watching TV. Don't watch "In the Name of the King"! Horrible movie!

Just replaced all the bulbs I could with CFL bulbs in the house. Costco sells a 10 pack of CFL bulbs for $11 after the instant rebate. That's the best deal I found on island. The hard part is finding dimmable CFLs. I finally found some at Wal-Mart for $9 each. Much more expensive than the regular CFL bulbs but if you have a dimmable fixture, it's a fire hazard to use the non-dimmable CFL bulbs.

My bike!

Decided to save some gas and ride the bike to Starbucks Kam Shopping Center from my house. Bike still runs great! One of the spokes was broken but das about it. That bike has been with me for over 10 years!

Took some pics of Mitsuken along the way. My fav is the breakfast at $2.88. I think it was $2.50 before but still a great deal with all the fried rice they give you.

Been looking into getting solar electricity to see what it's all about. Here are the numbers provided by Hoku Scientific:

Cost of a 1.32kW System $ 15,700
Less 35% Hawaii Tax Credit
Capped at $5,000.00 ($ 5,000)
Less Federal Tax Credit
Capped at $2,000.00 ($ 2,000)
Adjusted System Cost $ 8,700
Estimated Yearly Energy Savings $ 630

So that means it would take 14 years to pay for the system. I talked with another vendor and they charge close to the same. The panels are way bigger than solar water heaters so you would need a decent size roof. It has to face south and not be blocked by anything. Another factor to remember is the life of your roof. You don't want to install it and then realize your roof needs to be redone.

Right now, the cost is a little too high. Hopefully the prices come down and they don't get rid of the federal and state tax credit. Without those, it would be a lot more expensive.
