Wow! Miss Japan wins Miss Universe 2007!

Miss Universe 2007 - Miss Japan

In a a surprising finish, Miss Japan came out on top over some tough competition among the final five. I thought Miss Venezuela was going to take it with Miss Brazil finishing 2nd but was pretty stunned when Japan took it. This is only the 2nd time a Miss Japan has won the title. Here's the list of past winners. Omedetoo Gozaimasu Miss Japan!

Some observations:

- Vanessa Minnillo introduced James Kyson Lee as coming from Japan. He's from South Korea. Don't they write that kind of stuff down?
- What are the odds of Honey Lee pulling James Kyson Lee as her judge? I'm kinda surprised he didn't say something in Korean to her.
- The Korean translator didn't do such a good job. She seems to stumble alot.
- The Japanese translator did OK but could they pick a geekier guy?
- Michelle Kwan looks like she gained a little bit of weight
- I noticed some booing going on when Miss USA was on and I read later that it was some people protesting the U.S. policy regarding immigration.
- I was just thinking what would happen if someone fell on stage and boink goes Miss USA. I couldn't believe it. I felt so bad for her. I wonder if she got minus points for that?
- Miss Tanzania in the top 10? No comment.
- Thank goodness for my DVR! I watched the whole show in thirty minutes versus the two hours of air time.
- Damn! I lost my bet to Myong's Madness on who finished higher - USA or Korea.

Here's the rest of the top five:

1st Runner-up - Miss Brazil

2nd Runner-up - Miss Venezuela

3rd Runner-up - Miss Korea

4th Runner-up - Miss USA

Circuit City & Compusa Price Match Policy

Went to Circuit City to purchase a hard drive and they don't price match to limited time specials such as 2-day sales.

Here's their official policy:

"Circuit City is proud to offer the best prices on consumer electronics. Period. Buy a product from us and if, within 30 days of your purchase, you find a local competitor offering a lower advertised price for the same in-stock item, we'll refund 110% of the difference. If you haven't yet purchased the product, we'll beat the competitor's price by 10% of the difference between our price and theirs. Either way, you win.

If you purchase an item from Circuit City and we advertise the same item for a lower price within 30 days of your purchase, we will refund 100% of the difference.

Our policy applies only to local, advertised store prices. It does not apply to online offers, special offers or promotions, including rebates, free-with-purchase offers and special financing. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide price matches online, so please visit your local Circuit City store to take advantage of our Unbeatable Price Guarantee."

Compusa's policy is that they will price match only if the competitor has it in stock so you'll have to wait around for them to call the store and check on inventory. The clerk was complaining to the other worker that Best Buy knows Compusa's phone number and takes their time in answering the phone. That was pretty funny. Compusa, Bestbuy and Circuit City don't price match to include the rebate.

Is A.A. For You?

Due to concerns on my drinking behavior (see previous post), I decided to answer the twelve questions that only I can answer:

Twelve questions only you can answer

Copyright © 1973 by A.A. World Services, Inc.

IS A.A. FOR YOU?

Only you can decide whether you want to give A.A.a try —
whether you think it can help you.

We who are in A.A. came because we finally gave up trying to control our drinking. We still hated to admit that we could never drink safely. Then we heard from other A.A. members that we were sick. (We thought so for years!) We found out that many people suffered from the same feelings of guilt and loneliness and hopelessness that we did. We found out that we had these feelings because we had the disease of alcoholism.

We decided to try and face up to what alcohol had done to us. Here are some of the questions we tried to answer honestly. If we answered YES to four or more questions, we were in deep trouble with our drinking. See how you do. Remember, there is no disgrace in facing up to the fact that you have a problem.

Answer YES or NO to the following questions.

1 - Have you ever decided to stop drinking for a week or so, but only lasted for a couple of days?
Most of us in A.A. made all kinds of promises to ourselves and to our families. We could not keep them. Then we came to A.A. A.A. said: "Just try not to drink today." (If you do not drink today, you cannot get drunk today.)

Yes No

2 - Do you wish people would mind their own business about your drinking-- stop telling you what to do?
In A.A. we do not tell anyone to do anything. We just talk about our own drinking, the trouble we got into, and how we stopped. We will be glad to help you, if you want us to.

Yes No

3 - Have you ever switched from one kind of drink to another in the hope that this would keep you from getting drunk?
We tried all kinds of ways. We made our drinks weak. Or just drank beer. Or we did not drink cocktails. Or only drank on weekends. You name it, we tried it. But if we drank anything with alcohol in it, we usually got drunk eventually.

Yes No

4 - Have you had to have an eye-opener upon awakening during the past year?
Do you need a drink to get started, or to stop shaking? This is a pretty sure sign that you are not drinking "socially."

Yes No

5 - Do you envy people who can drink without getting into trouble?
At one time or another, most of us have wondered why we were not like most people, who really can take it or leave it.

Yes No

6 - Have you had problems connected with drinking during the past year?
Be honest! Doctors say that if you have a problem with alcohol and keep on drinking, it will get worse -- never better. Eventually, you will die, or end up in an institution for the rest of your life. The only hope is to stop drinking.

Yes No

7 - Has your drinking caused trouble at home?
Before we came into A.A., most of us said that it was the people or problems at home that made us drink. We could not see that our drinking just made everything worse. It never solved problems anywhere or anytime.

Yes No

8 - Do you ever try to get "extra" drinks at a party because you do not get enough?
Most of us used to have a "few" before we started out if we thought it was going to be that kind of party. And if drinks were not served fast enough, we would go some place else to get more.

Yes No

9 - Do you tell yourself you can stop drinking any time you want to, even though you keep getting drunk when you don't mean to?
Many of us kidded ourselves into thinking that we drank because we wanted to. After we came into A.A., we found out that once we started to drink, we couldn't stop.

Yes No

10 - Have you missed days of work or school because of drinking?
Many of us admit now that we "called in sick" lots of times when the truth was that we were hung-over or on a drunk.

Yes No

11 - Do you have "blackouts"?
A "blackout" is when we have been drinking hours or days which we cannot remember. When we came to A.A., we found out that this is a pretty sure sign of alcoholic drinking.

Yes No

12 - Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not drink?
Many of us started to drink because drinking made life seem better, at least for a while. By the time we got into A.A., we felt trapped. We were drinking to live and living to drink. We were sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Yes No

Did you answer YES four or more times? If so, you are probably in trouble with alcohol. Why do we say this? Because thousands of people in A.A. have said so for many years. They found out the truth about themselves — the hard way.

But again, only you can decide whether you think A.A. is for you. Try to keep an open mind on the subject. If the answer is YES, we will be glad to show you how we stopped drinking ourselves. Just call.

A.A. does not promise to solve your life's problems. But we can show you how we are learning to live without drinking "one day at a time." We stay away from that "first drink." If there is no first one, there cannot be a tenth one. And when we got rid of alcohol, we found that life became much more manageable.

I can honestly say that I answered No to all of the questions above. It is kind of scary what it would be like if I answered Yes to any of those questions. OK, who wants to go get a beer????

Moderation in all things.

UH Women's Golf has it's own poster?

First time I've seen their golf team with a poster. They're doing pretty good this season though finishing 3rd in the WAC tournament. Dale Gammie (the girl in the middle) also won the WAC Player of the Year. They are currently 14th in the NCAA West Regionals. If they finish in the top eight, they'll advance to the NCAA Championships May 22 - 28.

Need your printer fixed?

Computer Doctor is a division of NetEnterprise and is located in the Nimitz Business Center. I went there after calling other businesses to have a printer repaired. Their rates were the best and they were responsive and helpful.

Interesting opinion on The Secret

The link above pretty much sums up what I think of The Secret. I completely believe in positive thinking which is the general message that The Secret seems to promote but the book/DVD doesn't provide any specifics or hard evidence. You can think positive and ask the universe to give you this and that but action speaks louder than thoughts or words. You have to actually DO SOMETHING to get the things people desire in life. It's not going to just show up on your doorstep. If anyone is interested in watching the DVD, lemme know...

Five Reasons not to change careers

Found this cool blog - Brazen Careerist

1. You hate your boss. This is not a problem with your career. Change jobs instead of changing careers. Or, get better at managing your boss to get the treatment you want.

2. You want more prestige. Get a therapist - you’re having a confidence crisis, not a career crisis. Prestige is a hollow goal when it comes to careers. The quest for interesting, fun, rewarding work is one thing, but the quest for fame is, in fact, bad for you emotionally.

3. You want to meet new people. Try going to a bar, or Club Med. Is the problem that you are not able to make friends in your industry? It would have to be a pretty small industry for this to not be your own, social problem as opposed to an industry-wide problem. Be honest with yourself: Maybe what you really want is to get a life. Pick up a hobby.

4. You want more meaning in life. A job does not give life meaning. And anyway, people have been searching for the meaning of life forever. It’s a highly disputed topic, and probably too charged an issue to lay on your career.

5. You want more happiness. I have said many times that your job does not control your happiness, your mind does. Here’s good news, though: You can give your mind a happier disposition by meditating. I like that there is science behind this (thanks, Dylan). But I was a meditation convert as a volleyball player, before I knew the science.

KT Tunstall - Eye To The Telescope

Love her music! Especially "Other Side Of The World". I didn't know that she's half Chinese. Her mother is Chinese, father is Irish.

Google Base - Drive traffic to your website for free!!!

What is Google Base?

Google Base is a place where you can easily submit all types of online and offline content, which we'll make searchable on Google (if your content isn't online yet, we'll put it there). You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they do related searches. In fact, based on your items' relevance, users may find them in their results for searches on Google Product Search, Google Maps and even our main Google web search.
